The Catholic Church is on the verge of removing Limbo from their doctrines.
A Vatican panel has suggested (with the Pope's approval) that unbaptized babies could be admitted to Heaven.
While this sounds all well and good for the babies, this action calls into question the doctrine of original sin and the practice of baptism. Either unbaptized babies get locked out of Heaven or original sin doesn't exist. QED. Without Limbo, under Catholic doctrine there's no place for the babies to go but to Hell.
Aware of the fact that they are on the verge of overturning the basis for a good chunk of their religion and in the process might cause a major schism that breaks the Church, the authors waffled a bit... the babies *may* go to Heaven... [whisper: or maybe Hell] it's not totally clear... but they don't end up in Limbo. Therefore, God loves them [whisper: probably] and families can take solace in the "fact" that their dead unbaptized babies are basking in God's love in Heaven [whisper: maybe].
