Only Catholics should care about pedophile priests, Bishop and Cardinal cover ups and abuse of bankruptcy laws, why is that? How's Cardinal Law these days bill, think he'll ever face charges? should he? Mahoney in LA may need a golden parachute of his own. It's hard to know who to despise most for their corruption, the Church or the Republican Congress and Administration. Well ok that was a lie. It's not hard to decide the Church is more despicable but only because we already expect our politicians to be corrupt.

If the catholic church disappeared tomorrow it wouldn't bother me in the least.
Actually, I stand corrected, that goes for all religions.

This is great news.
I was born and raised jewish, but never really got into it and don't practice at all now. My wife is Catholic, mildly religious, but is thoroughly brainwashed that our new baby MUST be baptized. I'm somewhere between indifferent and a bit against the idea myself. I don't believe anyone should be indoctrinated into a religion. They should choose a religion when they are old enough to do so, if they desire to. Of course, if it really worked that way there would be many fewer religious people roaming the planet, and that's fine by me. I had agreed to go ahead with it, primarily for the sake of her family which is more than mildly religious. My mother passed away years ago, and was not religious herself. My father stopped being one when I was 8, so we don't need to worry about offending him. My extended family is not religious either. So this is really for my wife and her family. But if the Pope says it's no longer necessary, then there may be a safe way out of this. Yea!

If you believe in the 'mainstream' religions then you have to believe that Jesus died for the sins committed by man from the beginning of time until the end of time.
Babies commit no sins, so why shouldn't they go to heaven? If God is all knowing, he already knows exactly what sins I'm going to be committing next week, but according to Catholicism I'm already forgiven, as long as I believe? No I don't think I want to believe i such a vengeful, punishing God. Someone who only loves you when you do what he considers to be the 'right' thing. I love my children unconditionally whatever they do, I don't always like or love the behaviour, but I always love the child. I'm only 'human' but can do this for my kids, why can't God do this for his? So where's the problem? My God, this is all so confusing, it all sounds very sinister and 'cultish' to me. I just want to know, did anyone ask God about this 'Limbo' thing? http://www.cultinformation.org.uk/faq.html

I'm only 'human' but can do this for my kids, why can't God do this for his? So where's the problem? I'd be surprised if catholics don't believe God unconditionally loves everyone. I know most other christians do. As far as "good deeds", I assume catholicism puts a lot of emphasis on behavior. Whereas other christians are more "grace" oriented, where "works" do not get you to heaven. Of course, if you believe, you would try to do good things, but good behavior is not what gets you to heaven. Ron Sexsmith: God loves everyone Like a mother loves her son No strings at all Unconditional Never one to judge Would never hold a grudge 'Bout what's been done God loves everyone There are no gates in heaven Everyone gets in Queer or straight Souls of every faith Hell is in our minds Hell is in this life But when it's gone God takes everyone Its love is like a womb It's like the air from room to room It surrounds us all The living and the dead May we never lose the thread That bound us all The killer in his cell The atheist as well The pure of heart And the wild at heart Are all worthy of its grace It's written in the face Of everyone God loves everyone There's no need to be saved No need to be afraid Cause when it's done God takes everyone God loves everyone Maybe not completely Biblical, but closer than most would think. kj.

I'd be surprised if catholics don't believe God unconditionally loves everyone. I know most other christians do. Not round these parts. I live in the same town as Jerry Falwell, who is happy to tell me that his unconditionally loving God will cast me to Hell because I did not follow the proper Baptist protocols. Then there's his good buddy Pat "Hoof in Mouth" Robertson, who says we brought 9-11 on ourselves because of the gays. Not to mention his prayer parties to bring about the deaths of those who don't follow his dogma. And before you bring out the "It's these fringe whackos who give Christians a bad name" argument, I will say that these asshats are more mainstream than you care to admit. Fred Phelps is a whacko, nutcase on the fringe. Not Pat & Jerry.

And before you bring out the "It's these fringe whackos who give Christians a bad name" argument, I will say that these asshats are more mainstream than you care to admit. You're right, I woudn't agree that pat and jerry are typical of christians. But unfortunately (or not), people are people, and they aren't even nearly perfect. I've never met a christian who cares anything about pat or jerry though (I bet most are in their 80's). >>>Not round these parts. I live in the same town as Jerry Falwell, who is happy to tell me that his unconditionally loving God will cast me to Hell because I did not follow the proper Baptist protocols. I know you probably don't care, but something I've heard a lot is that it makes God sad when we don't do well. I would imagine it would really bum him out to ship people to hell, but that's part of free agency, in that we have been given that choice. None of that interferes with the idea that he unconditionally loves us. Just like with children, you don't let them do anything they want just because you love them. I haven't come in contact with many people who think only their denomination is "saved", but they probably exist. I think they're wrong, and I would bet a majority of christians would agree they're wrong. There's a huge amount of diversity of belief among even the people in one church, not to mention all different churches, so to characterize them all based on jerry and pat seems awfully wrong to me. kj. |
