I hate this grammatical rule

I agree that this grammar rule is actually sort of dumb; I typically don't observe it -- I look to the period to end a sentence, period. Once you know the rules, you can break them and claim artistic license.

I would consider the second one correct if it were about the distinction of a filename.
(plus it makes it more difficult to cut and paste, if one needs the quotes).

It can also depend on which grammar/style guide you use and when it was written. Back in high school I was taught that the second example of GtDS's was correct, the period went inside the ending quote only if it was part of the material quoted.

I don't think that counts as grammar. It's usage foisted on us by people who at some point probably felt it LOOKED better that way. It never made sense.

However, in other, more logical languages, the rule is that only the material being quoted is within quotation marks. You can't get much simpler than that. I choose to follow the logical rule used in German and other languages rather than illogical American usage.

Avoid it completely. Use bold or italics to differentiate field values from narration. And loudly declare-

This is a grammatical rule up with which I will not put !

Hi everyone,

You can't imagine how many times I had to explain to my students that logic and the rules that bind our wondrous language seemed to be fighting a never ending battle and that we're simply caught in the crossfire. So, we have to work within the rules and hope for the best.

It's a damn good thing I had just finished my drink before I read that, otherwise I would have spewed it all over my monitor!
