New Co-Worker is an Anti-Semite and a Conspiracy Nut
#1
'Know this guy for 2 weeks now. Seems like a very nice, polite, well-educated guy. A family man with a very nice wife and an adorable looking kid.

'Went out to dinner with him after a late night at work and after a couple of beers he spontaneously started on about how Jews secretly run the American government, 911 was a Jewish conspiracy, that there was no terrorist attack, that nobody but the pilots were in the airplanes on 911, that Jews are running the world markets and Jews are deliberately causing the current mortgage/banking crisis to destabilize the world, cause war with innocent Arab nations and enrich the Zionists in Israel.

I'm not polling for how you would have reacted and I'm not saying how I reacted when he said it.

Just... OMG! Where do people like this come from?! OMG! I work with this guy.

A survey of 17 counties recently revealed that fewer than half of them hold a majority view that 9-11 terrorist attacks were planned and executed by Al Qaeda. Other theories (Jewish Bankers did it, the U.S. Government did it, "don't know", etc., are among the popular alternate views) Maybe Al Qaeda command headquarters needs a better Press Agent? A more effective global PR campaign? It appears they didn't successfully get their message out?

I had a similar experience a few weeks ago with a guy at one of our other plants out of town. After a couple of glasses of wine he began holding forth on all kinds of conspiracies and whatnot.

I politely disagreed with him, and when the rhetoric reached a fever pitch, suggested that we change the subject and talk about work, after explaining that while I respected his right to have these opinions, I could not agree with them, and would prefer to not hear about it again.

Fortunately he was reasonably polite about it. Especially since he was driving home. We went for a walk so he could sober up, and talked about our kids.

I'm not sure what I would have done if he had gotten insistent.. probably started agreeing with him just so I could get back to the hotel in one piece. It would have made the following two working days very strained.

How do I feel about him now ? I keep a polite distance and keep our relationship professional.

The sad thing is, many conspiracy theories make as much sense as the lies we're fed by Big Brother.
