can't stand watching any of these clowns except when they have a decent musical guest on, and even that is 50/50 as the music mixes are generally weak and NOC squashes they living daylights out of them.

Ugh, there's little enough to watch on TV as it is without offering the viewer no choice at 10 pm on NBC.

I agree that Letterman has gotten very, very tired. At least Leno doesn't have that stench of "used to be cool but now I am just tedious" on him, since he was never cool to begin with. Conan is a broken record, too. These guys get into giant ruts and there they stay.
However, since I don't have cable, don't like continuous dramas, and can't stand cop shows, I'd as soon watch Leno as anything should I have some sudden need to watch TV at ten o'clock.

Craig Ferguson is the best of the lot, IMHO. His comic skits are so-so (a little too broad, and a little too Pythonesque for the more sedate 11:35 pm audience), but he is the by far the most spontaneously funny.

I love Craig Ferguson. He's obviously as sharp as a tack and well educated and he's very funny, so the Brit slapstick stuff is a small price to pay to watch him.

nice shot of R Thompson. Man what a talent.
Unlike the other lot we're discussing.
Like many elected and appointed pols and legislative types, TV hosts should have one 6 year term, at most, then on to someone new.

I still like Letterman a lot, and Ferguson as well. Letterman used to have a mean streak that surfaced from time to time that I didn't like at all. He's mellowed, and I've really enjoyed him ever since.
I've never found Leno funny outside of his former stand-up stuff. He may *still* be funny on the road, but his monologs frequently fall far short for me.
And he just doesn't seem to give a good interview. Similar to Oprah (but not as bad) he tends to turn any interview into something about him, or frequently tries to be funny at the expense of the guest.
At least we don't have the vapid blond guy. He had some babes on his show, but he was horrible. Nothing about him was funny. He thought he was terribly funny.
He was half right.

Certainly Letterman ain't what he used to be, but he's still a far sight better than Leno. The thing that bugs me most about Leno: He has no faith in his audience. For half the jokes in his monologue he is compelled to repeat the punch line at least once, as if he believes his audience didn't get it the first time or he thinks it gets funnier the more times you tell it.

Fully agree - said so in a similar thread some months ago.

Yes, that's it - Letterman's grown up.
