Nice jugs! Or, do you buy milk in a glass container?

I was at a grocery story about a month ago (not in my home town) and noticed they had milk in glass containers. Kind of old fashioned. Does anybody here get their milk like this? How do you like it?

Oberweus Dairy

Yup.

My Great Grandfather worked for the company from 1930 through 1960, as a coincidence.

Haven't seen glass containers in a long time.

Back in the days of home delivery (a really long time ago) the delivery man would open the back door, pick up the empties, and put the new bottles on the little shelf which was there for that purpose. There may have been a little door giving access to that shelf but we did not use it with Mother home on delivery days.

Those bottles had a little bulge in the neck where the cream collected and we had to shake the bottle before opening it to mix the cream into the milk. There was no such thing as 1% or 2%, it was just milk.

We'd badger the guy for ice in the summer. If he had a good supply, we'd get a piece.

i remember those days except our milk box was on the front porch and made of metal. we lived in NYC. in the winter my brother and i had to remember to get the milk before school or it would freeze and break the bottles. in the summer we had to remember to get the milk early or the heat would spoil it. mom would tan our hides if we forgot to bring in the milk and it got ruined!

we would also just leave a note if we needed additional milk, butter, or orange juice.

my grandmother in NE Philly had an insulated galvanized steel box outside on her front stairs.

ideally it kept the milk cold (or from freezing in winter) until it could be brought inside.

sort of like this:

As far as I know, this is the only dairy in California that uses glass.

My parents had home milk delivery until 1998, when the company discontinued the service. (This was Ohio dairy country, of course) Probably among last service of its kind in the country. Glass, paper cartons, plastic bags, white plastic jugs, yellow plastic jugs...they've seen it all!

We get Blue Marble Farms, a Wisconsin dairy, fresh milk in glass bottles. I think the deposit on the bottle is $1.50 but we just bring the empties back. A half gallon is around $3.50.
