mostly, maybe... there once was a G3 pulled from a 300MHz beige G3 MT when it was upgraded to a 466/500 ZIF that when transplanted into a clone DT would not play nice at 300 anymore... had to downclock it to 266 to run reliably, and not use max VRAM... worked at 288 in clone MT w/ max VRAM as an experiment, and ditto back in beige DT... left it in clone DT (w/ 15" CRT) for years, since it was better than the 150MHz 601 it was born with... it was odd getting a clunker CPU chip from AAPL, since, as you said, they usually had a fair bit of headroom.
