The old 20" displays were TN (not Twister, Naked) which accounted for 6-bit display technology and relied on dithering to get 16.7million colors. TN displays also had artifacts such as narrow viewing angles and banding of colors across the screen.
I don't know if the latter was a product of TN displays, or just poor execution of them.
But IPS is pretty much Top Drawer.
