I was 100% sure I had a cold. The doctor said it's probably H1N1

What kind of underlying conditions do the folks that die, have?

I have allergies and asthma (have not had an attack in about a year). I have never taken a flu shot, and have not had the flu in about 3 years. I used to get bronchitis and flu every year.

I am afraid of the shots.

Medical info like the specifics on what the underlying conditions aren't always given. Families have to agree to that. H1N1 can cause rapid fluid accumulation in the lungs, similar to avian flu. So you would suspect any lung compromising condition would put you at a higher risk for complications.

I'd get the flu shot every year more so to avoid pneumonia which can arise after a bout with the flu. Pneumonia vaccines only work against the bacterial version but may be a good idea as well. I'd definitely get the H1N1 shot when available.

Why are you afraid? I have sulfite induced asthma and am allergic to corn and still get the shot knowing both elements are in the shot. The mild reaction to the shot is far, far better than the flu and reactions to flu meds. It's most definitely better than getting pneumonia.
