Dense cloud cover reflecting the streetlights here in Chicago.
I remember back in 99 when the Leonids were supposed to be stellar... there was dense cloud covering the region. Determined to see what as supposed to be the most spectacular display of my lifetime, I fired up the weather map, saw where the cloud cover ended, and drove in that direction until I could see sky. The benefit is that it also got me good and far away from the big city lights.
I did see some incredible ones that night - probably around 40 in an hour.
I thought about getting up tonight but I was just too tired. I'll save my energy for another year.
