why do movie properties display this way in Quicktime player?

Digital Video (DV) is recorded using non-square pixels in order to increase the horizontal resolution / density. 720 is the number of non-square pixels. If you were to convert those pixels to squares that would translate to 853.

Hopefully that makes sense. Sometimes this stuff hurts to think about.
