I am a huge fan of the Canon 10-22 ultra wide angle. I've never tried the Nikon alternative, however. If you are going to be pretty serious about interiors, you should consider Canon's tilt-shift lenses, though these are over $1k. (BTW...how do you photograph the interior of a hose?)
The main problem with your decision is that it doesn't matter. Both are great, both have clear upgrade paths in both lenses and bodies (and flashes) to a staggeringly large array of choices & options, amateur, pro-am, pro.....
