Are you aware that Apple changed the pin out on the iPhone 3G and, cords designed for first generation iPhones don't always charge the later models? Seems to be a crap shoot. I've had some early cords result in the display of an error message but, still charge my 3G iPhone. Other times, I get the error message and, device doesn't charge. If the s/h isn't excessive, it would be worth the gamble.
