It wouldn't. QuickTime X is supposed to be able to take advantage of the QuickTime 7 engine when necessary, but in my experience one specifically has to open files with the QuickTime 7 Player in order to resolve playback issues.

Not a trim-feature per se. You can make a selection in the timeline and use cut, copy or paste to assemble the finished work... if you have a QuickTime Pro license.
If you never purchased a QuickTime Pro license for QuickTime 7, you'll need a workaround such as QTAmateur.
