"Jailbreak" the iPad to route 3G cellular over the built-in WiFi.
Then you get "unlimited" (5GB/month) of tetherable (via WiFi) broadband for $30 (half the price of the official tethered 3G)
3G vastly increases the utility, but how often would you actually need it? At least that is what I am thinking... I like that the 3G data plan is relatively cheap and has no contract, so you could try it and then cancel whenever.
