MacBook Air Dead and Fan is Running

Wife opened her Air (newer model) today and was greeted by a blank screen and a noise that we determined was a fan in the left rear part of the machine. Holding the power key down does not make the fan shut off and we have not been able to get it to light the screen. We don't know if any applications are running. I've had it plugged in for several hours thinking that maybe the battery was too discharged to boot but that didn't work.

Any suggestions before we get a Genius Bar appointment?
