Hey, for what it's worth, since this seems to be a common occurrence...
One of the A/C units at my business has the condensate drain from the air handler, which runs down through the building to ground level. It has the float switch on the drain pan. But then the drain pan also has a "backup" drain...which just runs out to the soffit edge of the roof and drips from there. That's how I know the main drain is plugged up...when I'm seeing condensate dripping from the 2nd story soffit/eave on the back of the building.
Long story short, if you have a pan and it's a relatively straight shot from the pan out to the edge of the building, PVC pipe is cheap to put in a backup drain.
