any medicine to reduce coughing? is Codeine over the counter is US?

My husband uses a cough medicine with dextromethorphan. That spelling may be off, but it is close. You can get the store brand, as long as it has that in it. It seems to work for him, but does nothing to help my daughter. Nothing has ever helped her coughs, not even ones with codeine.
