any medicine to reduce coughing? is Codeine over the counter is US?

I tried everything; finally went to the doc and he prescribed a steroid inhaler and albuterol inhaler. That stopped the coughing. Apparently it was not bronchitis, but asthma.
Better see that doc. Meanwhile gargle with that vodka-- and then swallow it!
