Bottom line, this was a seriously messed up kid. One doesn't need credentials to figure that out.
to me, there is a big difference between "angry, messed up kid" and "mentally ill." HUGE difference as to the degree to which he was able to control his behavior. The law seems to agree - though it is *really* hard to get an insanity plea to work...
Seriously messed up kid = mentally ill kid in my vocabulary (I didn't say angry). To what extent and to which diagnosis I'll leave to the experts. However, it does not take an expert to know with the behavior his friends, college classmates, and professors reported that he needed mental health care. Unfortunately, forcing someone to get help is not easy.
