There are lots of Windows fans who recognize the backwards-compatibility for the drawback that it is. Problem for MS is that there are zillions more who love it and depend on it.
All those IT dorks who think that XP is the best thing since sliced bread, for not having to do anything more in their careers. So many internal corporate web sites and apps that require IE6. And now MS imploring the world to once-and-for-all stop using IE6. This is what happens when you don't keep moving forward with better stuff, one day you look up and what was "good enough" for so long "all of a sudden" is bad.
