I find the Apple Universal setting to be fine in terms of quality and flexibility to use on any Apple product.
What I've done is make a set of m4v conversions using handbrake onto a hard drive.
The next step has lots of options. You could buy a WD media reader, or a Roku box, or use a mac using Front Row and play via direct connect or via streaming to an Apple TV.
