Could wife have started the Shut Down cycle and then, before the computer had time to shut down properly, she closed the lid? I did that once on a Sony Vaio and damned near cooked the laptop. Apparently, if Shut Down is begun but, not allowed to finish, inducing Sleep can bollux up the works. Said laptop neither Shuts Down completely or properly goes to sleep but, keeps "working" now with the lid closed severely limiting air flow. Luckily, I happened to check on my Vaio about an hour later, it was incredibly hot. Had I let it go overnight, I can see how it might have started a fire.
