Back to back hard drive crashes...
#8
I bought two 1 TB NewerTech miniStack drives a couple of years ago from OWC to use as backups for two Mac Minis. Within a few months, one of them wouldn't mount to the desktop. I called OWC, and when I described the symptoms (no clicking), they knew right away what the problem was, as if it was a common one with these drives. They gave me great service, no complaints about that, and fixed it under the warranty. More recently, the second drive is exhibiting the exact same behavior, but is no longer under warranty.

Two out of two.

I've decided not to have it repaired because I can no longer trust the NewerTech miniStacks as backups, and I think, based on my conversations with OWC's tech support, that they knew there was a problem with these machines and they continued to sell them anyway. I'll replace them with better quality (I hope!) drives, toss the NewerTech miniStacks into the toxic waste dump and chalk the whole deal up to experience.
