One of those things where popular conversation will win out over official convention. E.g., any given Air Force aircraft; the USAF gives an aircraft an official designation -- e.g., A-10 Thunderbolt-- and the popular name is the one that always sticks -- e.g., Warthog. (Note the complete lack of mention of "Warthog" on the Air Force's official page linked above, but at least 18 mentions on the user-written Wikipedia page.)
So it'll always be The Sears Tower. It'd be like Trump, say, buying the Empire State Building and renaming it the Trump Landmark Tower or something; it'll always be The Empire State Building.
