External Monitor on Macbook and Pull Down menu at top?
#5
Do you want to use both displays at the same time? If not, then the correct incantation is to connect the video cable, external keyboard, and external mouse, close the MacBook's lid, and then wake the MacBook from the keyboard or mouse. The external display should auto configure.

Little more info. There are three modes supported by an Apple portable. Extended desktop (internal and external display are used at the same time as a combined desktop), Mirroring (internal and external display are both used, but the external only mirrors the internal display, precluding a higher resolution on the external), and clamshell mode (the mode I initially described in this post).

Good luck.
