So, if there's just one person in the house and a 20 year old toilet works fine…

Solved. I went to Target and got a genuine Chinese flapper dingus and, upon taking off the old one, found it crudded up where it should have been keeping a tight seal. Maybe I could have cleaned and reused it, but the new one is a very attractive yellow hue and I couldn't resist changing it. I'm sure a guest will lift the tank top and gaze down into the tank, see that bright yellow flapper thing and exclaim (something or other). Who knows, maybe I'll get lucky some evening. Or not.

And maybe the wall can go without that coat of paint for another few years…
