The facebook environment seems to foster a more superficial type of broadcast communication. There are few conversations or activities that I share with friends that I want announced to the world, and, if I'm going to only have private discussions, it sort of negates any need for their service. When I want to stay in touch with distant friends, I find that a phone call or an individual email is a preferable and more personal way to stay in touch, and I don't get advertised to while I'm doing it.
