I, and a lot of other people are not upset about what CEOs earn per se. What we rail against is what they're paid when they fail!
Leo Apotheker was canned after just 11 months on the job at HP, and how much did he earn for his unsatisfactory performance? $25 million.

If any employee at a mid-to lower level position at HP had performed or acted in the same manner, they would have been tossed out on their a$$ in seconds (and perhaps even prosecuted.)
The other examples of these inequities at other companies and organizations are legion.
