Prop 8 ruled unconstitutional
#52
http://www.protectmarriage.com/why-marriage-matters

This is the group that brought Prop 8 to the ballot, and that continues to defend it in court. We all recall that they used deceptive advertising and confusing language in pushing Prop 8, and received major cash infusions from out of state religious groups such as the LDS church.

They use the term "traditional marriage" to mean one man, one woman, and view same-sex marriage as somehow detrimental to those "traditional marriages" though they fail to explain how.
They also have tried to show, and failed, that children raised by same-sex parents are harmed by that family arrangement.

Bottom line, they view gay civil rights as some sort of threat to society, though they are unable to show harmful outcomes of gay marriage, nor how limiting marriage to opposite sex couples is somehow better for society. Most of their arguments hinge on a disdain for the "gay lifestyle."

But you have to give them points for trying and in fact succeeding in getting discriminatory laws passed. So far they are not doing well in court, when faced with the issue of the Constitution, so we'll see how it goes.

Since the Prop 8 battle started, public opinion in the US continues to move in the direction of acceptance of same sex marriage. I think the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell was a factor too.

"A Washington Post/ABC News poll in March showed 53 percent of Americans said same-sex marriage should be legal, and 51 percent said the same thing in a CNN Poll released in April 2011."

By comparison, a 1996 Gallup found that 68 percent of Americans were opposed to same-sex marriage, a figure that has trended downward ever since."

Also, as we did in the civil rights battles of the 60's, our country faces significant regional divides on this issue: This poll is from 2008, and numbers have moved in favor of gay marriage since then, but it is illustrative of the regional and generational divides:
