Classic Mac (OS 9) Emulator for OS X?
#20
I downloaded Chubby Bunny from here:

http://www.macwindows.com/OS9_on_Intel_Mac.html

installed the folder on my MBP, double-clicked 'Classic.app', and OS 9.0.4 booted right up. It thinks it's running on a Power Mac 9500 series machine. It was a puzzle figuring out how to get any files into it, until I read a ReadMe document, which said that an empty drive called 'Unix' on the OS 9 desktop was mapped to the Shared folder in Users on the MBP.

It's pretty cool, actually. MacMoney looks like it runs, and my USB numeric keypad even seems to work—there doesn't seem to be an embedded keypad on the MBP's keyboard, unlike my older Mac laptops.

The Chubby Bunny installation comes with Word Perfect 3.5 installed—why, I don't know, but there is a coterie of WP fanatics out there who used to lament its demise. After putting the MBP to sleep by closing the lid, Sheep Shaver hung and required a Force Quit to get rid of.

The developer is quite frank about the questionable legality of Chubby Bunny, but since I have several OS 9 install disks, and a bunch of vintage Macs with intact ROMs, I don't think I'm infringing on any copyright rules.

Still, it's a bit of a kludge, and I'm not sure whether I'm going to use it to keep MacMoney going on this trip, or whether I will spring for a new personal-finance program (someone on another thread recommended Fortora Fresh Finance, which looks interesting—though oddly that post seems to have been removed: http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1,1329129 ).

But many thanks, Chakravartin, for the Chubby Bunny tip. Sure is a lot easier than trying to extract a usable ROM from a running Mac.
