Will you be leaving a computer at home with a live Internet connection while you are abroad?
OS X Server in 10.7.4 has a very good VPN service and it's an easy upgrade to a Mac via the App Store.
The times of travel will be unpredictable. If it goes down on the US side then you would need someone to get it going again, right?
Yes. Maybe.
Set the Mac's Energy Saver pref to restart after a power failure and put it on a good UPS and you'd probably be okay... but you should have someone to call to reboot it if things go awry.
If you're traveling extensively, it might be a good idea to put two systems in-place, a primary and a fallback. Perhaps set up an old laptop or a Mini at a friend or family-member's house.
Once you've got it going in one location, duplicating the setup at a second location would be piece of cake.
