I grew up watching the conventions of both parties. Our whole family sat in the living room together, watching. For one thing, conventions used to be fun and exciting. Plus, with gavel to gavel coverage, you got to watch the platform being built and the delegates voting on things.
Nowadays both conventions are just a dog and pony show -- however, the dog and the pony are running for President and Vice President, so that makes it important.
I must confess to not watching this year. I can play the speeches I'm interested in on youtube more conveniently than anything available on broadcast TV.
