MicroUSB is not reversible, lacks détente retention, and accommodates only 4 conductors vs. 8 on the Lightning connector. I'm sure the lightning connector is technically better.
But microusb DOES work, I have it on my battery case and it's great. Microusb cables are dirt cheap, everywhere, and really are fast enough for the times you need to occasionally sync your iPhone or iPod.
In fact, one of my favorite bonuses of the battery case is eliminating the proprietary 30 pin connector.
Maybe the lightning connector will become open as a standard like display port or thunderbolt. I doubt it, however. Apple makes too much money off these kinds of things due to all the iPhone sales..
