As far as wireless printing, turn the printer on to print and off when you are done.
My son's college (U of Minnesota) wouldn't allow routers, switches or hubs. I tried a router and it was blocked but the switch worked all year. At my wife's university: she has a wired connection and her IT services gave her a switch to interface with their network, thus she also has to turn her printer on to print.
When we first got cable in our home some 15 years ago someone 10 houses away printed to our LaserWriter 16/600. And someone almost two miles away had their Mac show up in the Chooser and I was able to place a file on his desktop. Those were the days.
