Sounds like your experience is pretty limited.
Many engines have filters accessed from the top of the engine. Mercedes for example. On my Buick V-8s, I can grab them from the top, and drop them right down into the drain pan. Same with many Buick V-6 rear wheel drive applications as well.
I would only use a Fumoto-style drain valve in a very protected environment, like on a marine inboard, or a genset. All it takes is to high center once, and at best you need a new oil pan.
