Generally speaking (not always, of course, this IS the English language we are discussing) A vowel followed by a consonant and another vowel is pronounced with the "long" sound, and if followed by two consonants is pronounced with the "short" sound—think of mite and Mitt, bite and bit.
So "frige" could be seen as being pronounced "fr-eye-ge" although that really sounds clumsy. The phonetic spelling clears up the matter of pronunciation while the phonetic sound obfuscates the matter of spelling.
