Seems like it was designed for a child's fingers, not for an adult. on iPhone it is acceptable because the base of the iPhone is not tilted, but on iPad the edge where you plug it in is tilted and the add the case and more than half of the lightning connector is not accesible to pull from.
Why do you think Apple chose this design?
My guess is to make it less tempting to try to pick up the device by the cable....
