They've made a conscious decision to abandon local news coverage and try to catch the worldwide internet bubble. Last week they put the Boston Globe back on the market, last time was for union concessions, this time is final.
The Globe's always been a great regional newspaper, hopefully they'll find a buyer to continue that tradition.
NYT has recently adjusted goals and now looks at itself as the multinational "Newspaper of Record". Seems one of the others in that competition is now HuffPro.
This whole metamorphosis is fascinating to watch. Gutty will undoubtedly have something more insightful to offer.
