Thanks to Catzilla's help tonight, I got the 'wrong answer'-it's NOT the power supply 
Next step is Apple Store for diagnostics, Friday night, but I fear motherboard or another big problem. I doubt it'll be worth it to fix. I don't have much of importance on it, just those items on the desktop. I run my system from an external and most of my important data is on the 2 externals and online backups. I will want to get the items off the desktop if I can, though. I'm guessing that's going to involve a cable purchase if I get a 'new' machine.
I may be in the market for a used Intel Mini, 1.83ghz or better. Low end is fine...
