When we first evac'd here (Central AR, where I have friends from way back) from the New Orleans area after Katrina, one of my checkboxes (when we were home-hunting) was a requirement that cable or DSL internet was available, especially since I was going to likely be working from the area for a good spell (long story, and end result is I'm still here). I was flummoxed that more areas didn't have either but, as you said; boonieland -- within a mile off the interstate, pretty typical (if a bit sparse at the time) subdivisions, but add a few miles and you're in farm country or forest. I really like it, though the area I'm in is getting pretty crowded now.
I really thought six or so years ago that satellite or OTA internet (and I'm not talking about HughesNet or WildBlue, which are complete shit) would be the norm by now, and that it wouldn't matter where you lived; you'd have on-par-to-cable (then) internet access.
