My wife is the poster child for custom orthotics ending her plantar faciitis.
She tried expensive shoes and off-the-shelf insoles.
But going with custom inserts ($400 a set first time she got them), she had noticeable improvement in 48 hours.
I, on the other hand, have mild PF in my left foot. Custom orthotics did not work for me - and purchased from the same company. But when they mapped my feet, they claimed the issue was in my right foot (which is still, knock on wood, pain free!).
My take-away: depending on the source of problems underlying PF, custom orthotics CAN work great. But it's not going to fix everyone.
