This was a starving 50 pound female cougar, about half normal weight.
The boy was back at his house and nearly inside, his life was not in danger. The coug was most likely after the dogs the boy had been out feeding.
It may have been an act of mercy to kill this particular female since she was starving. But this wasn't about saving any human's life.
