Here's the uber quick and dirty summary:

Clone original drive for backup. Copy extra "stuff" to archives drive, purge original stuff off primary drive. Once amount of used space is less than X amount of gigs, clone primary drive to SSD or platter drive. Done.

I'm not sure where I said your solution wouldn't work. I'm thought I was clear it would work.
Did you see any evidence that Gene tried to follow it? Any thoughts about what the barrier to doing so may have been?
