I noticed the ctivo page claims compatibility with the Premiere and older Tivo's, and pytivo was released a few years ago.
In my opinion - there's nothing like Tivo's ease of use and reliability. If you ever decide to leave cable, all the shows are still yours (though protected content requiring cable card decryption may not play).
The shows will still play on the Series 3, even when the TiVo is not connected to the cable (i.e., no cable card).
Now, just to find the time to get those shows off….
