Gene, I have to say that as convenient as it is to have everything on your desktop, it's killing your speed with finder.
What I do for key folders is move them to documents, and make an alias to put into the desktop.
In Mac OS X, a cluttered desktop just slows everything down. Lots of reports on the web to discuss details.
As needed, I've even made a folder in my documents that is 'old desktop files' to help me get going. If I really need that file, I go and get it and put it back onto my desktop.
