The California rivalry is very one-sided. For whatever reason, perhaps a little insecurity mixed in with their arrogance, the North is much more into it. Those in the South generally don't care.

Is it insecurity or is more that it's simply hard to raise the pulse of Los Angelenos for anything other than the price of Lattes and whether their weekend tans last the entire week!

S.F. has true, passionate fans who can be somewhat to extremely obnoxious. They enjoy the rivalry and wish that it would be reciprocated. After all who doesn't enjoy the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry or Michigan-Ohio St. rivalry (when Michigan fielded decent teams)? It would be great to have something like those duplicated on the West Coast.
The "rivalry", at least baseball-wise, started when the Giants and Dodgers were both in New York, and Cal/Stanford or UCLA/USC can both stand on their own native Californian rivalry-wise, as well as the Kings/Ducks/Sharks three-way puckfest. The Lakers/Clippers battle is however taking a long, long time to develop into a meaningful bout. Unfortunately, the Dodgers have gone corporate, and average fans can't afford to go to the games, or this year even watch them on television thanks to TWC holding them hostage. Magic and the rest of his Guggenheim Gang need to make the Dodgers more accessible... and I'm a die hard Giants fan, that actually also likes the Dodgers. 2ยข
