Why?
Depends upon the product.
A few examples: I avoid corn syrup/sweeteners in most stuff; I only buy peanut butter where the sole ingredient is peanuts; I don't buy "100% fruit" drinks where the first (or second) ingredient is grape juice or apple juice (because in mixed-juice products both grape and apple juice are processed to the point where they are just refined sugars with little relationship to either grape or apple); and I try to buy bread with good fiber content.
