$40 a month connection fee for subsidized phone. Forever.
$15 a month connection fee for outright bought phone. Savings of $25 a month.
$850 / $25 is 34 months before you break even, which means you need to keep the phone 2.83333333 years before you break even on the deal.
Do you keep your phones longer than that? If so, buying outright is the deal for you. If not, move along. For me? I usually keep my phones about 4 years. I'm still rocking a 4S - 4 years ago.
