Thanks to the internet, I'm seeing lots of stories about the loyalty animals have to the humans who rescue them

I caught a young painted turtle when I was a kid (wish my parents had advised me to put it back, but that's another story). It very quickly began to take food from my fingers, and liked having its head stroked.
